Many astronomers (not to be confused with astrologists!) started their stairway to the heavens at a planetarium, where they watched projections of the stars, planets and other celestial objects, perhaps accompanied by a scientific audio commentary. While planetariums certainly are extraordinary places, nothing comes close to a starry night outdoors ...
The universe2go Planetarium for the Smartphone
combines the best of two worlds: a view of the real stars plus interesting annotations and commentaries. And it's extremely easy to use! Simply insert your smartphone (see technical details below for required specs) into the headset, hold it up and start the free app. Via mirrors, the names of stars and everything you'd expect from a regular planetarium will be projected into your field of view.
In addition, you can activate an audio commentary that will tell you the Greek myths surrounding the Big Dipper, the Little Bear, the Clever Nerd and their companions. The database of the Universe2go includes the entire Hipparcos catalogue – that's roughly 120,000 stars – the NGC catalogue and special images of the planets, 150 deep sky objects and satellites. And the cherry on top of this amazing gadget? The ISS Warner. The app will alert you every time the International Space Station appears on the horizon! A small step for a smartphone, a big step for your evening entertainment :).
